Health minister has high praise for Lions camp facility

It was the first time that the province’s health minister had ever set foot on the grounds of Lion Max Simms Memorial Camp, but he was duly impressed.
“This is a beautiful setting here out in the woods by the river,” said Minister Ross Wiseman. “I am impressed by the quality of the facility and the accommodations.”
That’s not all he had praise for, however.
On Friday night, the minister was the guest speaker at the closing banquet and social of the week-long summer camp for members of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind from across the province.
Participants celebrated 26 years of CNIB summer camps at Max Simms, which gives blind and visually-impaired people a chance to participate in activities they don’t always get a chance to enjoy.
“I was really pleased to celebrate the CNIB’s tremendous work,” said the minister. “I also wanted to talk about the great work that this agency has done in the province. The government is also pleased to be in a partnership with the CNIB, and we provide them with an annual grant of $600,000.”
The minister also complimented the province’s Lions Clubs for putting money and support into the Max Simms camp, particularly the Bishop’s Falls Lions Club.
He called the Lions’ devotion to the camp and in particular the CNIB event “really refreshing.”
Minister Wiseman noted the camaraderie that has developed among campers over the years, as many of them are regular attendees at the Max Simms summer camp.
“It’s wonderful to hear the stories, such as learning that two people who got married because they met at the camp and two other people who are regular campers got engaged,” he said. “The people here demonstrate so much of a spirit of friendship here.”
