Jaden Daniels exits against Alabama after a roughing penalty

Jaden Daniels left the game after taking a hit while throwing against Alabama.

Tuscaloosa, Ala. — Following Crimson Tide linebacker Dallas Turner’s hit on Saturday night, LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels left in the second half of the Tigers’ 42-28 loss to Alabama.

Daniels, who tried to stay in the game, was later placed in concussion protocol after a stellar effort in which he threw for 219 yards and ran for 163 more in the loss.

“He had a head injury and couldn’t come back,” LSU coach Brian Kelly said after the loss. “We’ll have to get him tested more before I can definitively say it’s concussion, non-concussion, things of that nature.”

Later in his game’s news conference, Kelly was asked about a possible review of Turner’s hit-and-run goal. The play drew a rough-passer flag, but not much else.

“We asked them,” he said. “They said they were reviewing the booth for targeting. Obviously, I didn’t have the ability to see it. But any time there’s contact in the head or neck area, you think there’s got to be some type of target.”

Daniels lay face down before walking off the field. His mother came to the medical tent to check on him.

“They reviewed it,” Kelly added. “They didn’t realize it (the goal). So, we moved on.”

Garrett Nussmeier finished the game for LSU. He completed 5-of-10 passes for 53 yards as Alabama scored the final 14 points of the game.

“We’re playing Top 10 on the road. You can’t play better,” Kelly said. “We played well, (but) good wasn’t good enough. When you go on the road and play a top 10 team you have to play elite.”
