A security guard at a New Hampshire psychiatric hospital was shot and killed Friday, and authorities say a suspect was shot by state police troopers assigned to the facility.

This incident took place in New Hampshire Hospital Concord Friday afternoon, New Hampshire State Police said. State Police Director Col. Mark Hall said all patients at the hospital are safe.

Bradley Haas, 63, was shot while working at the facility’s front lobby entrance around 3:30 p.m., the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office said in a news release. Haas, a former police chief in the nearby small town of Franklin, was working as a New Hampshire Department of Defense officer.

Authorities have not released any information about the suspect, a citation said Serious investigation into the incident.

After the shooting, officers investigated a suspicious vehicle in the hospital parking lot. It was later destroyed and found to be safe. Law enforcement officers used a tactical robot to search U-Haul, videos from CNN affiliates show.

Authorities plan to release more information about the shooting Saturday morning.

The head of New Hampshire’s Department of Health and Human Services said Friday evening that he was “shocked and saddened” by the shooting.

“Our hearts go out to the victim’s family and our colleagues who were affected,” Commissioner Lori Weaver said at a news conference.

The hospital will be temporarily closed to visitors, but patients and staff will be supported “as we work through this tragedy together,” Weaver said.

“This is a difficult and unimaginable day for our employees and our community,” the commissioner added.

Governor Chris Sununu A Report on XThe social media site, formerly known as Twitter, said the state was “immediately mobilized, with first responders and law enforcement on the scene.”

“This afternoon, an incident occurred at a New Hampshire hospital that has been contained. While the scene remains active as the campus is cleared, the suspect is deceased,” Sununu said. “We will provide as many details as possible as this situation unfolds.”
