Andre Braugher, star of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Homicide: Life on the Street, has died at age 61 following a brief illness.
Prager frequently portrayed a police officer throughout his career, appearing in both dramatic and comedic roles.
He won two Emmy Awards from a total of 11 nominations in his career for his roles in Murder and Thief.
Terry Crews, who played Terry Jefford on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, paid tribute to Prager’s “irreplaceable talent”.
“I am honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you, and shared eight glorious years of witnessing your irreplaceable talent.” The crew posted on Instagram.
“It hurts. You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will forever be grateful for the experience of knowing you. Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness, and your friendship.
“You have shown me what a life well lived looks like.”
Born in Chicago, Prager graduated from Stanford University before attending The Juilliard School for Drama.
Braugher won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for his work on Thief in 2006.
He was nominated for 11 Emmy Awards – including four for his role as Captain Raymond Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
Prager’s breakthrough came in the 1989 film Glory, where he played a soldier in a black Union regiment in the American Civil War.
Directed by Ed Zwick, the film also stars Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington – who won his first Academy Award for his supporting role in the film.
Prager’s television career flourished in 1998 when he played Detective Frank Pembleton on the Baltimore police show Homicide: Life on the Street, for which he won an Emmy Award.
He most recently starred in the biographical drama She Saddle, which stars Carey Mulligan and Joe Kazan as investigative journalists who break the Harvey Weinstein story.
He played Dean Paquette, a New York Times managing editor who oversaw two reporters.
The actor’s other film credits include Primal Fear, in which he starred opposite Richard Gere, Salt, Angelina Jolie and City of Angels alongside Meg Ryan and Nicolas Cage.
But many will remember him best for his role in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, in which he starred alongside Andy Samberg, Stephanie Beatrice, Joe Lo Truglio and Melissa Fumero, playing a New York police officer in Brooklyn’s fictional 99th Precinct.
David Simon, whose non-fiction book Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets inspired the show, said Prager’s death was “too soon”.
“I’ve worked with so many amazing actors and I’ll never work with a better one,” The Wire creator Simon said on Twitter.
Actor Mark Evan Jackson, who played Prager’s on-screen husband in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, shared a picture of the pair hugging while on set, wearing wedding rings.
He captioned the post on X: “Oh Captain. My Captain.”

Brahr’s other notable credits include Benjamin O’Davis in Tuskegee Airman, Dr. Ben Gideon in Gideon’s Crossing – which earned him a Golden Globe nomination – and Owen in Men of a Certain Age, all of which earned him Emmy Award nominations.
Men of a Certain Age co-creator Mike Royce said on Twitter, “I can’t process this. He was the best actor in the world. An incredible man. An unfathomable loss.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, he played the male lead in the Netflix-backed murder-mystery The Residence, set in the White House.
Braugher died Monday after a brief illness, his publicist Jennifer Allen told the PA news agency.
He met his wife, actress Amy Brabson, on the set of Murder and is survived by his three sons.
