Kroger and Albertsons on Tuesday released a list of 579 stores that would be sold under the grocers’ proposed mega-merger, including 63 locations in California.
Most of California’s locations are in Southern California.
According to Bloomberg, the Kroger CEO sent a memo to employees at all affected stores informing them of plans to transfer locations to C&S Whole Foods if the merger goes through. All employees will be able to retain their jobs through C&S, officials said.
The merger is being challenged by the Federal Trade Commission, which says the proposed $24.6 billion merger would reduce market competition, lead to higher grocery prices, and negatively affect workers.
Kroger denied such claims, insisting that no stores, distribution centers or manufacturing facilities would be closed, and that “customers will benefit from lower prices and greater selection” through the merger.
The United Food and Commercial Workers union, which represents grocery store workers, issued a statement Tuesday saying it will continue to oppose the merger.
“Today’s announcement changes nothing,” the union said. “The merger is not a done deal, far from it. We’re focused on stopping the proposed mega-merger for the same reasons we’ve said since it was first announced 20 months ago — because it hurts workers. It hurts shoppers, it hurts suppliers and communities, and it’s January. and rejected by the attorneys general of the states of Colorado and Washington in February and we applaud their actions This proposed opt-out list, the companies made public today, months and it has not changed their opposition to the proposed merger.
“These legal challenges to the proposed merger are moving forward with hearings scheduled to begin in late July and run through September.”
