Rice University shooting: Female student found dead in dorm, man found with self-inflicted gunshot wound

An investigation is now underway after a Rice University student was found dead inside her dorm by authorities.

Officers responded to a welfare check Monday around 4 p.m.

Andrea Rodriguez Avila, a junior at Jones College and said to be from Maryland, was found dead in her room on campus, school officials said. A non-student was also found with a gunshot wound.

Investigators at the scene determined Andrea was the victim of a homicide, school officials said in a message to the Rice community.

Officials said a welfare check was made after a family member had not heard from Avila and authorities wanted to check on him.

School officials said they checked her classes to see if she was attending and determined she did not go to class today or miss a class.

Officers then entered, where he was found.
