Stars including Beyonce, Jay-Z and Rihanna were seen taking over Paris Fashion Week in Pharrell Williams style.
The Get Lucky musician-turned-designer made his debut as Louis Vuitton’s men’s creative director on Tuesday evening.
He transformed the Pont Neuf, the city’s oldest bridge, into a celebrity-studded, gold-carpeted and gospel-painted disco.
After the death of his predecessor, former Kanye West collaborator Virgil Abloh, it was widely seen as an industry pioneer.
In essence the event – attended by NBA star LeBron James, actress Zendaya, reality star Kim Kardashian and supermodel Naomi Campbell – was as much a gig, a show and a party as it was a fashion show.
Jay-Z played a gig on the bridge at the end of the night, with a delightful cameo from Pharrell on their collaboration I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me) and Frontin’.
Rihanna, meanwhile, shot to fame after wearing a Pharrell-created “Damoflage Print” dress for the upcoming range. It revealed her baby bump.
Williams, 50, told AFP news agency that before the show, she felt the history behind the modern dominance of black culture.
“I think these companies are slowly but surely waking up, and I think they understand that we have taste and that we have to offer something more interesting,” he said.
“Historically and factually, it has been whitewashed [but] While that’s been difficult for us historically, it’s made it easier when it comes to flavor because we’re bringing such an amazing combination.”
He added: “When you see LeBron James wearing something, when you hear Jay-Z’s lyrics, when you see and hear Beyonce, the energy and the voice is amazing.”
The NERD and Neptunes singer, rapper and producer also paid tribute to Abloh, who died of cancer in 2021 at the age of 41. “I collaborated with him on a few things,” Williams said. “Spiritually, his energy is still here.”
