CINCINNATI — New arrival Christian Encarnacion-Strand may have something in common with fellow Reds prospects and friends Matt McClain and Ellie de la Cruz. McClain and De La Cruz each provided a boost to the lineup when they received their big league promotions.

Encarnacion-Strand, a corner infielder called up Monday from Triple-A Louisville, wants to emulate his teammates.

“Yes, hopefully,” said Encarnacion-Strand, who is the company’s no. 5 prospect and ranked No. 88 overall by MLB Pipeline. “If I play my game — sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t — but hopefully I can help and make an impact.

In its four straight losses to the Brewers entering Monday, Cincinnati had been shut out three times, especially as McClain and De La Cruz struggled for the first time as big leaguers. The second-place Reds entered the day trailing the Brewers by two games in the National League Central race.

“I think a lot of young guys have provided a lot of energy and a lot of spark. I wouldn’t say we’re a pump or not a pump,” Reds general manager Nick Krall said of Encarnacion-Strand. “I think he is a great player and we have a chance to put him in a good situation.”

Infielder Kevin Newman went on the 10-day list with gastritis to make the 26-man roster for Encarnacion-Strand.

Encarnacion-Strand, 23, was the designated hitter and batted seventh in Monday’s series opener against the Giants. No. Given 33, it was his choice to have “Encarnacion” stitched on his jersey number rather than his full name.

In addition to giving him more time to hone his skills defensively at his new position at first base, the organization wants Encarnacion-Strand to improve his strike zone discipline and pitch selection. In his first 18 games and 84 plate appearances, Encarnacion-Strand had 23 strikeouts and one walk.

In 49 games, he has lowered that percentage to 19.8 percent, with 46 strikeouts over 232 plate appearances.

“He’s made changes in the last couple of months and he’s dropped his chase percentage from 49.5 to 38.5 percent, which is huge, it’s the lowest it’s been in the middle of the season,” Krall said. “He’s batting better with that, he’s showing more power.”

Encarnacion-Strand had a reputation in the minor leagues for being able to reach bad pitches and still do damage.

“I never thought about it,” he said. “When I’m out there, “Can I hit this ball hard, yes or no?” If I can’t, I better not swing. If I can, stop my swing.

Called up on May 15, McClain was happy to have Encarnacion-Strand back on his team.

“Once he hits the line, you’re on base and he’s going to hit you. It’s a good feeling,” McClain said. “If you’re a pitcher, you don’t want to miss because he’s going to. Hit hard.”

The Reds acquired Encarnacion-Strand, Spencer Steer and minor league pitcher Steve Hajjar from the Twins on August 2, 2022, in exchange for Tyler Mahle. Encarnacion-Strand was in Double-A at the time.

Encarnacion-Strand has spent a lot of time this season. During spring training and while Joey Votto was on a rehab assignment in Louisville, he got advice on hitting and fielding.

“That dude works so hard, it’s unbelievable how hard he really works,” Encarnacion-Strand said. “To learn from him from a first-base and winning standpoint, I’m very grateful.

“At first, I was very comfortable. Over time, I think it was the right time [to get promoted], honestly. They kept me there and I got a lot of work.”

Encarnacion-Strand wasn’t worried about when his promotion would come, but it certainly felt meaningful when it came Sunday night.

“It feels like I’ve been working on it for a long time,” he said. “Right now I’m playing with really good guys. I hope I can come and help win.”
