Instagram’s threads have surpassed 100 million users

Instagram’s new Threads app has already crossed 100 million users, a milestone even faster than ChatGPT. OpenAI’s chatbot crosses the mark After two months, but Threads, which only launched on Wednesday, got there in a few days. The number of users can be seen on the Instagram app, which tracks the size of the Threads user base.

Users don’t register: they also post. As of Thursday, more than 95 million posts and 190 million likes had already been shared on the app, according to my colleague Alex Heath.

Threads is still in its infancy, and we’ll have to wait and see if it captures the same cultural cachet that Twitter did. Meta isn’t specifically targeting an attempt to replace Twitter, According to Instagram CEO Adam Moseri, and the company isn’t going to actively promote political and hard-hitting messages on the platform, but it could end up being people’s go-to for a conversation-based social media platform. Meta “couldn’t be more upset” about how launch week went, “We don’t know if this thing is still holding up” Moseri said.

Updated July 10, 3:58AM ET: Updated to include data on Twitter’s user numbers.
