12:30pm: Indy 500 qualifying practice for row 11
∎ Fastest simulated qualifying runs in this practice: Christian Lundgaard finished 1st, followed by Sting Ray Rapp, Graham Rahal and Jack Harvey.
∎ Sting Ray Robb took a 4-lap simulated qualifying run at 230.033 mph.
∎ Jack Harvey took a 4-lap simulated qualifying run at 229.912 mph, slower than his Saturday qualifying effort.
∎ Christian Lundgaard took a 4-lap simulated qualifying run at 230.563 mph. “It’s like yesterday. … It’s a little frustrating.”
∎ Here’s an update from Rinus VeeKay, a top 12 qualifier:
∎ Team owner Bobby Rahal is still looking for qualifying pace in his three cars – Graham Rahal, Christian Lundgaard and Jack Harvey: “We need to find some more speed. … We’ll keep at it.” The elder Rahal knows the feeling: He won the 1986 Indy 500 as a driver, but missed out on the race in 1993.
∎ Graham Rahal took a 4-lap simulated qualifying run at 229.946 mph, faster than his Saturday qualifying efforts, but not safe to race.
∎ Sting Ray Robb took a 4-lap simulated qualifying run of 229.827, slower than his Saturday qualifying efforts. Here’s what team owner Dale Coyne had to say:
∎ Christian Lundgaard takes a 4-lap simulated qualifying run at 230.440 mph, slower than his Saturday qualifying efforts.
11:30 am ET: Indy 500 qualifying Fast 12 practice
∎ 11 out of 12 drivers register hot laps. Tony Cannon is content to gather information from the Arrow McLaren teammates and let it fly in the Fast 12 qualifiers. Pado O’Ward, one of Canaan’s team-mates, believes that given the favorable driving conditions, Dixon’s pace to win the 2022 pole will be overshadowed by many drivers.
∎ Rookie Benjamin Pedersen has a single no-do lap at 235.026 mph. When he got to know the speed he said “That’s fast. Holy cow”. “It’s a rocket ship now.”
∎ Rachel Letterman Lanigan Racing considered changing chassis after Saturday’s qualifying round, NBC reported, but IndyCar rules prohibit such a move during qualifying weekend. Juncos Hollinger Racing changed the chassis of Callum Ilott’s car on Friday, it was sanctioned, and he qualified 28th on Saturday.
∎ Rinus Weeke sputters during the run, forcing him into the garage for repairs. Team owner Ed Carpenter tells NBC that the team has identified the problem and that VeeKay will be able to make a fast 12 attempt. VeeKay is sure to make it to the top-12.
∎ Santino Ferrucci has a simulated 4-lap qualifying run of 234.649 mph a few minutes into the session, and Pado O’Ward is also over 234.
∎ Air temperature is 70 degrees and track temperature is 98 in sunny skies and almost no wind. Drivers love the conditions.
